Coffee Talks

The School Counseling Department will offer parent meetings to share topics pertinent to high school success.  All meetings will be held on Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. in the Media Center and will last approximately 1 hour (except for the two virtual Coffee Talks).  Below is the calendar of dates and topics for the 2019-2020 school year.  To view materials from previous coffee talks, please refer to the menu on the left.

September 19: State University System of Florida Spotlight & the College Application Process
Did you know that Florida is the top ranked state for higher education for the third year in a row, according to rankings by U.S. News and World Report? Did you know that there are 12 public universities in the state? Come and hear about them and what a great bargain they are.

November 14th (Virtual Coffee Talk): Mental Health Issues Teens Are Facing & Resources for Assistance
This VIRTUAL COFFEE TALK will focus on the mental health issues our teens are potentially facing in today's world and the warning signs for parents. In addition, resources for assistance will be provided.

January 16th: The Registration Process for 2020-2021 Classes
That's right! It's that time of year again when students and parents begin selecting courses for next year. Hear from a counselor about what credits are needed for high school graduation, what courses are best to prepare your child for their plans after high school, what courses Park Vista offers and to what grade level, and what courses colleges, universities vocational schools and the military would like to see on your child's transcript.

March 12th (Virtual Coffee Talk): Military Service Academies & College R.O.T.C. Opportunities
Is your child interested in attending one of the five United States military academies? How about attending a college or university on an R.O.T.C. scholarship? This process should begin as early as possible and this VIRTUAL COFFEE TALK is the place to start!

April 23rd: Demystifying the College Application Process
Your child receiving their acceptance from their college of choice is one of the most wonderful events your family will experience. Before that happens, there is much work to do. This Coffee Talk will assist you in beginning the process in order to get to that point. Come hear from one of our counselors on how to navigate these often murky waters.
