Course Description and objectives: This course offers a challenging study of English literature and practical writing experiences, including a college type research project, and study leading to enhanced reading skills. Activities will include independent reading assignments, vocabulary building, study of accepted grammar conventions, and writing experiences to enable students to exhibit the fore mentioned skills.  

 

Supplies: Students are REQUIRED to bring the following supplies each day.

  • 3-ring BINDER (with three sections devoted to English)
  • Loose-leaf paper (no spiral bound)
  • Blue or black pens (at least 2), pencils, highlighter
  • Planner, agenda or assignment book is recommended.

Assignments: Assignments are to be completed in blue or black ink only.  Include name, date, period in upper right-hand corner; a title should be included on all work.  All assignments must be handed in ON TIME unless granted extended time prior to the due date. No late work will be accepted.

Missed Work: It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete missed work.  Students are to check the Absent binder for assignments.  Missed class notes may be obtained from classmates.  Missed work is due on the next date a student returns to class.

Grading: Grades will be based on a total point basis.  Each assignment will have its own assigned value from 10 to 100 points depending on the difficulty level. 

A=100%-90%, B= 89%-80%, C= 79%-70%, D= 69%-60%, F- 59% and below.

 

 

 

 

CLASSROOM RULES AND PROCEDURES

All rules and regulations contained in the student handbook will be in force at all times.

  1. Students are to be in class on time, with all necessary materials.
    • When the tardy bell rings, be in your seat and begin the “do now” on the board.  There should be no talking during this assignment.
    • Bring your own supplies to class each day.  Supplies will not be provided by the instructor.
  2. Students are to participate in classroom discussion and practice.
    • Answer or ask a question only when called upon.
  3. Students must remain attentive to the teacher while instruction is given.
    • Students are NOT allowed to put their heads down on the desk to rest or attempt to sleep.
    • All disruptive items will be confiscated and given to the appropriate dean.
    • No personal grooming is allowed in the classroom.
    • Students are to remain in their seats unless instructed otherwise. 
    • The class is dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.  Students may not “line-up” at the door in anticipation of the bell.
  4. Be respectful of classmates and classroom.
  • Do not mark on anything except for your own paper.
  • Pick up and throw away any garbage around your desk before leaving the classroom.
  • NO food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

CONSEQUENCES

Failure to follow the above rules will result in the following disciplinary action:

  • 1. Verbal warning of inappropriate behavior
  • 2. Loss of participation points for the day
  • 3. Call to parents to inform them of the problem
  • 4. Disciplinary Referral
